Artist Description:

"Sans Rival" was part of a Filipino foodie series to celebrate the food we grew up with. The first time I had sans rival was at a Filipino food festival, and I had one made with pistachios. It didn't particularly grow up with this dish, so it was nice to try something new.

I researched more about it and they're typically made with cashews. This is because sans rival was inspired by French pastries like dacquoise, and because almonds or hazelnuts weren't readily available in the Philippines, we used cashews. I also learned that this dish was invented around the 1920s and 1930s when Filipinos traveled to Europe to learn French cooking, and brought those techniques back home.

This is why I drew the character wearing a flapper inspired Filipiniana dress, which is fashion that I associate with the 1920s and 1930s eating all kinds of sans rival desserts in her ancestral house.
