Artist Description:

"Manananggal" was initially created for a book called 'Monsters and Dames,' which is a yearly collection of work featuring art from artists participating at Emerald City Comic Con's artist alley. This piece was created in 2019, and it was during a time I was first exploring and learning about the various groups of Indigenous People of the Philippines, along with my introduction to Filipino spirituality outside of Catholicism.

The only thing I knew at the time was the manananggal/aswang, so to represent the culture for this book, I wanted to combine what I knew and what I was learning at the time.

This piece became the catalyst of my journey reconnecting back to my heritage and my roots. It has now become a lifelong purpose and decolonization journey for me to continue to learn and explore the complex but fruitful culture of the Philippines beyond the status quo. Art has been my way of sharing my knowledge and personal spiritual practices and beliefs with others who are ready to dive in.
