Artist Description:

"Magwayen's Call" is inspired by a dream I had involving my interactions with Magwayen, the Visayan Goddess of the Sea and Underworld. I was going through deep grief at the time, so much so that I've lost motivation to do anything, I was uninspired to create any art, and I was exhausted from years of burnout. I've lost faith in myself to keep going, and I felt like a ghost wondering "what's the point?"

When I encountered her, I thought I was going to go "Underworld" and I was fully prepared to work on my shadows because that's nothing new to me. To my surprise, she told me that I don't NEED to work on healing anymore, because I will always have to opportunity to heal, but what's the point in healing if I don't enjoy my life?

This was such a confronting experience, because it made me aware that I don't make enough space to just relax or have fun. As a recovering workaholic, I realized I used "work" as an excuse to push away the difficult emotions and traumas throughout my life, and Magwayen was encouraging me to "heal" by remembering my joy. I knew at that moment that she was going to lead me to a new journey, and a new life.

When she posed this challenge to me and offered her hand, I was ready to answer her call. Are you?
