Mayari Print (Classic)
Mayari Print (Classic)
Mayari, the Goddess of the Moon, is also known as a goddess of war, revolution, beauty, and strength.
In Tagalog mythology, Mayari lost her eye due to a fight over who should rule the land against her brother Apolaki, God of the Sun. After their war, Apolaki apologzied for hurting her, and decided to rule together equally. While he rules the day, Mayari rules the night, and her lost eye is why the light at night is dimmer.
I also drew her holding a kampilan which is a legendary sword known to kill enemies with one strike. The hilt usually depicts the bakunawa, which in Filipino myth is a dragon that eats the moon, which was an explanation for lunar eclipses.
